Barbering and Cosmetology Services Resume in Maryland

On May 13, 2020, Governor Larry Hogan announced the replacement of Maryland’s stay-at-home order with a safer-at-home alternative as part of the first phase of reopening the state. As a result, barbershops and hair salons were able to resume operations at 5 p.m. Friday, May 15 under new guidelines designed to promote safety and continued social distancing. Shops and salons are permitted to operate by appointment only and up to 50% of their full capacity. Read the governor’s executive order online. The governor's order only allows hair services to be performed. It does not allow nail services, esthetic services and other non-hair services at this time during phase one. It is important to note that the state has given local jurisdictions the authority to enter phase one of reopening at their own pace. Check the website of your local jurisdiction to obtain up-to-date information.

Boards Issue Sanitation Guidelines and Checklist for Reopening

The Maryland Boards of Barbers and Cosmetologists have prepared a reopening sanitation checklist for barbershops and hair salons to follow while preparing to open and operate.
